Traditional Tibetan Medicine

Tibetan Medicine is a complete, holistic system of medical science from the traditional culture of Tibet. This science of healing represents a continuous lineage of practice spanning many centuries. Tibetan Medicine is based upon four primary classical texts, known collectively as the “Gyud Zhi” (Four Tantras). The theory of Tibetan Medicine is based on the dynamic balance of the Five Elements, in the context of the elemental physiology of our human condition. This synergistic balance of the Five Elements expresses in our natural world, the seasons, our geographic locations, as well as each individual’s unique elemental constitution.

Featured product - Birth, Life and Death

The book has four major sections. In the first part, Introduction of Tibetan Medicine, the author and founder of SSI School of Tibetan Medicine, Chogyal Namkhai Norbu, enlarges on the fundamental characteristics of the human organism, based on the nature of its various physical components and their interactions, as seen by this ancient medical tradition.
The first section, on birth, touches on numerous related topics, ranging from the causes of conception of life in the womb to the behavior that the pregnant woman should follow. The second section, on life, starts with an explanation of the so-called ‘three doors’ of body, voice and mind and explains the way to live in good health. It presents the causes leading to humor imbalances that provoke the arising of illnesses, the properties of foods and drinks, various types of behavior to be followed in different circumstances, and so forth. The section on death deals with the nature of death and our attitude toward it but most of the discussion deals with the four types of intermediate state: the intermediate state between birth and death, the intermediate state of the moment of dying, the intermediate state of the real condition of existence, and the intermediate state of becoming.

Testimonials of Our Students

Diet and Lifestyle Course Participant

„The 1st level Diet & Lifestyle course was a wonderful introduction to two key components of Tibetan Medicine. Despite having trained extensively in Western approaches to health and nutrition, this course has had a significant impact on how I view these subjects. It’s quite amazing just how holistic this system is, it’s given me a much more integrated view of how to work with diet and behavior. By starting to understand the systems of the elements and constitutions, I’ve been given a new lens through which to view everything I’ve learned before.”

Chae
